Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. A random extra substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Many locations have upgraders for their items, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded, and can be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit and an issue.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. After a player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This applies even if the items come from an entirely different set of equipment.

It's also important to use crests wisely, as they have only one purpose. It is recommended to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
